Background

In Longtown an innovative community consultation has taken place this year involving Carlisle City Council, the Parish Council and Cumbria County Council. Branded 'Longtown Moving Forward' the project has been driven by a strategic property review and the closure of the local school. Local people have been asked to think about the public buildings and facilities in the town. The first stage involved user friendly consultation packs which were widely distributed around the town. Over 300 people took part and the community has now been presented with 4 possible options for the future. This exciting consultation really got the town talking and local people and community leaders have welcomed the open and upfront approach the councils have taken.

Phase one of this project will involve a Local link opening in 2009. Phase two, it is hoped will see additional investment in the area including an extended and improved nursery. This is subject to further funding approval.

Funding

It is planned that the improvements will be funded as a result of the rationalisation of property assets.

Update

Longtown Local links was officially opened on July 17 by the Chairman of Cumbria County Council, Cllr Roger Bingham and the Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr William Graham. A family fun day was held to celebrate the opening of the Local links which included story telling and a children's entertainer. Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service were on hand to offer fire safety advice and to display one of their fire engines. Also attending were legal advisors, Cumbria Constabulary, age concern and benefits advisors.

The centre is situated in the fully refurbished Longtown library, which is now open for 25 hours a week (previously it was open for 13 hours when it was just a library). The number of PCs in the library has also been doubled, increasing internet access for the local community.

A new meeting room is in operation seating up to six people, this can be booked by ringing Longtown Local links on 01228 791638.
