Community Activity
A new Minibus sharing scheme has been set up in Copeland by North Cumbria Community Transport and is based at Phoenix Court, Cleator Moor.
Brokerage is a minibus sharing scheme that enables voluntary groups and organisations within the community to use accessible and affordable vehicles.
Cleator Moor Credit Union was founded in 1995, a community based savings and borrowings organisation owned, run and controlled by its members. Member's savings are pooled together to be used as a common fund from which members can apply for low cost loans. The Credit Union now has around 500 active members. Cleator Moor Development Company is a community initiative formed in 1997 to find a community use for the Co-operative building. Single Regeneration Bid funding was awarded in 1999. CMDL aims and objectives are to strengthen and re-define the service centre role of the town. Address disadvantage and inequality, and to broaden the area's economic base.
A number of organisations are currently working on a participatory appraisal project in the Cleator Moor Regeneration area. Groundwork are acting as the lead body on this project and Kirsty Lowrie is the worker to contact, number below, should you wish to either find out more about the project or get involved.
Forum Meetings
The Forum meets a minimum of four times per year with meetings being held in Cleator Moor Civic Hall.
Forum Area
The Cleator Moor Forum area is largely rural taking in Cleator Village and the small mining town of Cleator Moor, which is used as a service area for surrounding villages.
There are limited employment opportunities in the forum area with very few manufacturing industries. Kangol sports wear factory and factory shop at Cleator is one of the larger employers but has reduced its workforce over the last few years. The main employer for the area remains British Nuclear Fuels.
Unemployment in the area is currently around 6.8% with the majority of people having to travel out of Cleator Moor area for employment.
The population of the forum area is approximately 7396, since 1991 there has been a steady decline in population especially in the Cleator Moor South Ward. Cleator Moor is a mix of old and new properties comprising of private, council and housing association homes.
