Cumbria's next major Transport Scheme

On Tuesday 8th April, Allerdale Local Committee will hear about the progress being made in taking forward the Workington Southern Link as the next major transport scheme for Cumbria.

At the last Local Committee, Members explained that one of the biggest concerns to the people of West Allerdale is about the need for major highways investment to link the A595, the Lilyhall industrial estate's development land, and the 'brownfield' development land in Workington's traditional industrial areas. Work has already been undertaken by Capita to investigate a range of potential options looking at economic and environmental issues and providing the justification for progressing the Workington Southern Link Road. Once the preferred option has been agreed the County Council's Cabinet will then consider it alongside the Kendal Northern Scheme and the Duddon Estuary Crossing when County Council bids for the next major transport scheme for Cumbria to be included in the Local Transport Plan 2006 - 2011.

County Councillor Barbara Cannon, Chair of the Local Committee says,

"The provision of a Workington Southern Link Road will not only improve the links to and from Workington but also reduce heavy goods traffic in residential areas of the town, including Salterbeck and High Harrington. There is already far too much congestion spilling around local residential areas causing a greater risk to pedestrians. A Southern Link Road will also compliment the area making it more attractive to new industries improving West Cumbria's economy. The scheme already fits all the criteria necessary for inclusion in the next Local Transport Plan bid to Government and there is already considerable support for this scheme. This Committee will do all it can to make sure that the Workington Southern Link is considered by Cabinet as the next major transport scheme for Cumbria."
