Local Committee extends opening hours at Maryport civic amenity site

Today, Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Allerdale agreed to commit an extra £25k to continue to fund Friday and Sunday opening at Maryport's civic amenity site in 2003/04.

The Local Committee conducted experimental Friday and Sunday opening during 2002-3 after hearing of the growing mountain of waste that was coming through the gates of sites in the Allerdale area. People using the Maryport site have increased considerably and waste is now being deposited more evenly over the longer opening week.

County Councillor Barbara Cannon, Chair of the Local Committee says

"The local committee conducted experimental Friday & Sunday opening because we were conscious that in some areas of Allerdale people were having to travel long distances by car to bring the rubbish that wouldn't fit into their household bins and four o'clock in the afternoon was too early for sites to close, especially in the summer. I am very pleased that the extended service has been put to good use which has encouraged the Local Committee to commit a further £25k so it can continue for the next financial year.'
