Local Committee to discuss waste management issues in Allerdale

On Tuesday 8th April, Allerdale Local Committee will be debating whether to increase public access to Maryport's civic amenity site by finding the money to pay for extra opening days during 2003-04.

Allerdale local committee conducted experimental Sunday and Friday opening during 2002-3. It is clear from the amount of vehicle numbers and waste tonnages that people using the Maryport site has increased and waste is now being deposited more evenly over the longer opening week.

County Councillor Barbara Cannon, Chair of the Local Committee says

"In December last year, this Committee decided to allocate some more cash towards extending the opening hours at this site. We were conscious that in some areas of Allerdale people were having to travel long distances by car to bring the rubbish that wouldn't fit into their household bins and four o'clock in the afternoon was too early for sites to close, especially in the summer. I am delighted that this money has not been wasted and householders visiting the site with their rubbish have put the extended service to good use. I hope that we will be able to continue with these improved opening hours during the next 12 months at the County Council's Maryport waste collection site.'
