Partnership to debate transport infrastructure of Cumbria

On Friday 25 April 2003 at Forum 28 in Barrow, The Cumbria Strategic Partnership (CSP) meets to discuss the transport Infrastructure of Cumbria'.

The CSP needs a thorough understanding of the decision-making area for transport infrastructure in the county. It is commonly acknowledged that Cumbria is a unique case in the North West with particular issues around developing effective east west transport links, improving access for Furness and West Cumbria and improving the quality, speed and reliability of the West Coast Mainline service. Other areas for discussion include the potential for air transport, the capacity to increase utility of local rail services (particularly the coastal route) and the role of the county's ports in freight carriage.

Bill Lowther, Chair of CSP says,

"The purpose of this debate is to focus the impact that transport infrastructure investment can have on the economic regeneration of the county. This will include discussion to determine strategic changes or improvements in the broad transport infrastructure of and around Cumbria that would enhance and support economic regeneration for the whole of county. It is envisaged that a short-term task group might be set up to further examine issues raised during the debate, agree an action plan and report back to the CSP at a future date."

Speakers will include:

  • Tim Hill, Director of Planning, Transport and Sustainability, NWRA
  • Mike Shields, Chief Executive, NWDA,
  • Laura Wren, Assistant Director of Stakeholder Relations, Strategic Rail Authority
  • Pradeep Bhagawan, Director of Carlisle Airport,
  • Ralph Howard, Director of Community, Economy and Environment, Cumbria County Council

In addition to the debate on transport infrastructure, presentations will be made on the following matters:

  • Bryan Gray, Chairman of NWDA, will address the partnership on Perspectives on NWDA relations with Cumbria.
  • Mike Shields, Chief Executive of NWDA, will present a paper on economic issues in the Lake District.
  • Chris Collier, Chief Executive of Cumbria Tourist Board, will present a paper on the Cumbria implications of the Vision for Tourism in England's North West
