07/08/03 - Task force in jobs talks

The Cumbria County Council Task Force set up to deal with potential job losses at Whitehaven company Huntsman Surface Sciences has met with senior officials from Huntsman.

Michael Carter, manager of the Whitehaven plant, explained to the Task Force yesterday the factors that had led the company to the decision to consult on the loss of 85 jobs, as part of the company's efforts to make the plant more competitive.

Michael Carter said:

"We are committed to continuing to serve our UK and export customers and we have a desire to continue production in Whitehaven. To achieve this we must optimise the operational arrangements in Whitehaven."

County Councillor Lawson Short, Cumbria County Council's Cabinet member for regeneration and chairman of the Task Force, said:

"The organisations involved in the Task Force are available to work with the company in support of its efforts to maintain its operations in Whitehaven. Increasing the plant's competitiveness now will hopefully lead to growth in the future."

The Task Force also heard that the West Cumbria Employment Support Group is available to assist those who will be affected by the rationalisation to find alternative employment.
