21/08/03 - Positive GCSE results for Cumbria

Schoolchildren in Cumbria are celebrating today as they receive their GCSE results. Although only a limited number of schools' results have so far been analysed, it is clear that children in the county have again done well this year, maintaining last year's gains in both overall and higher grade passes.

County Councillor Joan Stocker, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education says:

"It is still early days to be able to give a detailed analysis of this county's GCSE results as we are still receiving individual results from our schools. However, I am delighted that the picture we are getting at this stage is that there has again been a good performance at GCSE level in all of our schools with most at least maintaining last year's improvements. This mirrors the national picture.

But today is a day for celebrating the success of individual pupils and the support given by teachers and parents. Together, they have worked very hard to raise the standards throughout our schools and these results indicate a great achievement by the children of this area."
