New Workington library at Vulcans Lane opens 9am , Monday September 1
The newly-refurbished library at Workington opens its doors for the first time at 9am on Monday September 1 to show the vibrant atmosphere and up-to-date facilities which the best of today's libraries offer. The premises at Vulcans Lane have been transformed in the last nine months into a contemporary-look modern library, with room for people to meet or have a coffee while they browse. Besides the coffee area, there are much improved ICT facilities, including broadband internet access, listening posts at which adults and children can listen to CDs, and a great selection of books, videos, CDs, DVDs, Play Station 2 games, talking books and CD-ROMs.
Councillor Tim Heslop, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member with responsibility for libraries, said:
"We would like to say thank you to our customers for being so patient while the refurbishment has been going on. We are sure they will find it is worth it when they visit the new-look Vulcan Street library. It has a welcoming atmosphere and is also an exciting place which shows that libraries are still about books but have so much more to offer besides. Anyone who has not been inside a library for a while should pop in for a coffee - seeing is believing!"
The library service has been carried on in temporary premises at Pow Street since last November to allow the refurbishment at Vulcans Lane, where the library has been located since 1974. An official launch of the new library is being arranged for a date in October. Details will be released at a later date.
