Today, Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Allerdale agreed to allocate an extra £20k for more youth grants, and to enable groups to apply early and in good time to get holiday play scheme ideas in place for the school holidays.
The decision has been taken after the Committee heard that there was increased interest for grant support from voluntary groups working with young people across Allerdale. The Committee was also keen to ensure that voluntary and community groups looking to put together ideas for holiday play schemes, for school aged children, this Easter and during the long summer break should be encouraged as much as possible.
County Councillor Barbara Cannon, Chair of the Local Committee says,
"Again, this year we have received far more grant applications for community based youth activities than our normal budget allows. By giving an extra £10,000 for grant support, more real work can take place in our neighbourhoods and communities to really benefit young people. We also recognise the importance of Holiday play schemes for young parents with their children during the long holiday breaks. These schemes run by local volunteers take a lot of planning, and they need as much help as possible in getting ideas and money in place as early as possible. This extra £10,000 cash should help them to succeed."
