Improvements to bus services in Barrow

A number of improvements have been made to bus services in and around Barrow town centre, improving the public transport network in the town.

The improvements, which come into force on March 3rd, include:

  • The West Shore to Ormsgill Service 2, which runs evenings and Sundays, has been extended during the daytime and is now covered by the town centre to Newbarns Service 3 and Barrow Town Hall to Ulverston Service 6.
  • The Town Centre to Newbarns Service 3 has been extended to Furness General Hospital via Ormsgill and now runs every 10 minutes
  • Barrow Town Hall to Ulverston Service 6 has been extended to West Shore to give link to Furness General Hospital. There are four buses running every hour. Saturday services have been increased from three to four buses every hour.
  • The town centre to Roose Service 4 has been extended to the railway station and now runs every 20 minutes. This replaces the 99 service, which only ran every 45 to 60 minutes.
  • North Scale to Town Hall/cemetery gates Service 5 has been extended to Furness General Hospital off peak and evenings hourly.

Barrow has also been added to the national +Bus network, which means that local bus tickets can be added onto a rail ticket. Weekly bus tickets can also bought on the bus for the first time. A town booklet and route map will also soon be available giving details of the new timetables.

Councillor Kevan Wilkinson, County Council spokesman for transport issues, said:

"These improvements to the bus network in Barrow has improved cross town links to Furness General Hospital, which I am sure will benefit many people using buses for a variety of reasons. The changes will improve public transport in Barrow as a whole but particularly for people travelling from north Walney. Having Barrow included in the +Bus network will make it much easier for people making their journey by bus and train, encouraging the use of public transport in general."
