Seven schools across the County are celebrating this week after being awarded Specialist School Status by the DfES. These schools will now have an additional focus on their chosen subject and will receive additional Government funding to develop their specialism.
Schools presented a 4-year school and community development plan with ambitious but achievable targets and performance indicators. Each school has had to raise sponsorship in order to be considered.
Schools that have been awarded specialist status are as follows:
Caldew School, Dalston - Business & Enterprise
Cockermouth School - Maths & Computing
Keswick School - Science
Nelson Thomlinson, Wigton - Maths & Computing
Netherhall School, Maryport - Sports
Stainburn School, Workington - Science
Whitehaven School - Maths & Computing
County Councillor Joan Stocker Cabinet Spokesperson for Education says
"These specialist schools will have an additional focus on their chosen subject area but must meet the full National Curriculum requirements and deliver a broad and balanced education to all pupils. I am delighted that this County have gained more Specialist Schools in this round than any other Authority in the North West. They have worked extremely hard to gain the sponsorship required to apply for specialist status and I would like to congratulate them on their success."
