New Barrow crossing opened by local woman

A Barrow woman who campaigned for a new crossing on Ainslie Street is helping officially open it tomorrow, Wednesday 19th February, at 1pm.

Sylvia High will be joining Parkside County Councillor Alan Nicholson, Chairman of Barrow Local Committee, which funded the scheme. They will be the first two to 'officially' cross the new zebra crossing.

Councillor Nicholson said:

"This crossing has been installed as a result of people power as it was originally brought to the attention of Barrow Local Committee following concerns from Miss High. I am pleased I was able to help get this crossing up and running. It is a very busy area of the town and that particular location is a popular place to cross for the elderly and young mothers with children. The crossing includes build outs, which will improve visibility at side road junctions. These extensions, which widen the footways, allow pedestrians to see the moving traffic better and allow motorists to see pedestrians, especially children, more clearly. Since the work was done, we have had very positive feedback and I am delighted that the Local Committee has been able to fund this important safety scheme."

Miss High, from Westmorland Street, said:

"This crossing has made a real difference to me. Before it was really difficult for me to cross. Traffic comes from all directions and, due my mobility problems, it often used to take some time. Now, the crossing makes it much easier for me to go about my business and I am much more confident crossing the road."
