New environmental improvement scheme for Brampton

Work will soon start on improving Brampton town centre after Carlisle Local Committee agreed to fund a new environmental improvement scheme.

Councillor John Collier, Chairman of Carlisle Local Committee, said:

"This scheme will benefit everyone in Brampton by improving facilities for pedestrians, road users and the general environment in the town. This work follows extensive consultation with local people to find out what they wanted and there is wide agreement for the scheme. I am pleased it can finally get off the ground."

Original consultation into the project was carried out in 1997 and certain aspects were introduced after that including disc parking in the on street spaces, a weight restriction on Craw Hill, CCTV in the town centre and a priority system in High Cross Scheme.

This next package of measures will result in signalised pedestrian crossings on Main Street and Carlisle Road, disabled parking bays in the town, improved footways on High Cross Street, the south side of Front Street between High Cross Street and around Market Place, a one way system on the access road next to the post office, improved highway lighting and block paving to Falkins Hill to improve the surface for pedestrians. The scheme will cost a total of £600,000 and should start next month.
