Work goes ahead on Bus/Rail Interchange

Detailed design work is to go ahead on the planned bus/rail interchange for Carlisle city centre. Cumbria County Council's Carlisle Local Committee agreed today (February 5) to support the scheme, which is part of the local transport plan.

Councillor John Collier, chairman of the Carlisle local committee, said:

"We are taking this opportunity to have a wider look at traffic flow in this part of the city. It gives us a chance to weigh up new ideas on how to improve it. If any members of the public have any suggestions to put to us, we shall be pleased to consider them."

Council officers will continue with detailed design of the scheme. They will also begin work on proposals for minor improvements at other junctions on the city's core highway network that could be implemented at the same time. The proposals will be published for public consultation in the spring.

Update on road projects on major routes in and out of Carlisle:

  • The main part of the major road improvement scheme on Warwick Road has been finished a week ahead of schedule.
  • Work is going well on the Wigton Road improvement and it is hoped to remove temporary traffic lights on Monday next week. They will have to be reinstated temporarily for later stages of the scheme.
  • Because of the good progress so far, it is hoped to make an earlier start than planned on the Brampton Road improvement scheme.
