Boost for Barrow's economy

Barrow's economy received a boost today when Barrow Local Committee approved grants totalling £31,900 to support economic initiatives in the town.

A grant of £10,000 was given to support the on-going development of Forum 28 and £7,500 was awarded to support the employment of a European projects development officer for Barrow.

Councillor Alan Nicholson, Chairman of Barrow Local Committee, said:

"This grant follows the devastating outbreak of Legionnaires disease at the centre. Forum 28 is the town's leading arts and theatre venue, which is regularly used by many community groups and which employs many artists through its dance and theatre programme and 45 full time staff. This grant will secure a £45,000 Arts Lottery bid and support from North West Arts. The Local Committee has agreed that we should do all we can to ensure the survival of the centre.

The grant towards a European Projects Development Officer will help local voluntary and community groups access the necessary European funding for economic development initiatives which they may otherwise lose out on. The successful applicant will identify potential projects and provide applicants with advice."

Other grants to small business projects were approved, ranging from £1,000 to £2,500, to help create new jobs or sustain existing employment
