Child Protection Committee independent review of the death of Michael Dickinson

Cumbria's multi-agency Child Protection Committee has today issued the following statement following the sentencing of Michelle Dickinson. The statement covers the current position regarding the independently chaired review of agency involvement in this case.

"The independent review of actions taken by the agencies who provided support to Michael and his family is continuing. As was stated at the time of the completion of the trial of Michelle Dickinson this was an unusual and complex case involving a wide number of agencies both from within Cumbria and beyond.

It is important that a full and through review of all agencies actions is completed, lessons to be learned need to be clearly identified and recommendations put forward for further enhancement of child protection procedures where appropriate. That work is ongoing, the report with its recommendations will be published at the earliest possible opportunity."

The independent review is being carried out under Part 8 guidance from the Social Services Inspectorates guide "Working Together to Safeguard Children" and is chaired by consultant paediatrician from outside Cumbria.
