Two community groups in Barrow have benefited from grant support thank to grants from Barrow Local Committee. The British Red Cross Cumbria Branch has been awarded £394 and Mind in Furness £537.
British Red Cross Cumbria cares for people in crisis by offering a number of community services, including emergency response, first aid, medical loan, fire victim support service, skin camouflage and therapeutic care, and attends many public events offering first aid services. The grant will be used to buy high visibility waterproof jackets for their volunteers to be warm, protected and obvious to members of the public at events.
Furness Mind is a local mental health charity that provides advice, support and social integration to those experiencing emotional distress and mental health problems. They also provide leisure, recreational, educational and employment opportunities, with their social centre providing a safe, secure and supportive environment. The funding will go towards a refurbishment project aimed at providing a warm and welcoming environment for clients.
Councillor Alan Nicholson, Chairman of Barrow Local Committee, said:
"These grants are from the Local Committee's Neighbourhood Grants Panel which, since it was set up a year ago, has supported 22 local groups with a total of more than £46,000. The funding ensures that local communities in Barrow have access to a wider range of activities and increased opportunities. The two groups that have benefited today are both worthy recipients and deserving of our help."
