Copeland's archaeological heritage still a priority for Local Committee
Today, Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Copeland were updated on the progress of archaeological projects that they funded during 2001/02 and agreed to allocate a further £9k to the County Archaeological Service to allow them to undertake other archaeological initiatives within the area in 2002/03.
The 4 initiatives that the Local Committee commissioned during 2001/02 are as follows

- An interpretation sign is to be erected at St Bridget's Old Church, Beckermet
The 4 new projects identified for 2002/03 are as follows
- An interpretation sign is to be erected at the nature reserve at Millom Ironworks detailing aspects of the site which is currently being developed as a visitor facility costing in the region of £2000
- The report completed by Oxford Archaeology North commissioned in 2001/02 identified 5 outstanding research questions regarding the structural development of Egremont Castle. These would be answered by carrying out a geophysical survey costing in the region of £2500 and would be valuable for understanding the castle and managing the monument in the future

- Conservation assessment and grant application for a conservation plan at Saltom Pit costing in the region of £2700 - £3000. The site is in urgent need of assessment by a team of archaeologists, conservation architects and engineers in order to establish a long term viable management strategy
County Councillor Ronnie Calvin, Chair of the Local Committee says
"I am very pleased that the Committee is able to continue to fund archaeological initiatives in this area. The first 4 projects that we funded during 2001/02 have raised awareness of Copeland's archaeological heritage and have improved the tourist and educational potential of the area, in particular at Moresby Fort. I hope with our assistance the County's Archaeology Team can get these projects off the ground which will enable the local people to appreciate the archaeological heritage of this area as well as increasing tourism."
