Hoax callers beware

Cumbria Police and Cumbria Fire Service have warned potential hoax callers that they will be severely dealt with if they are caught making hoax calls during the forthcoming 24 hour strike by the Fire Service. Rigorous procedures are in place to track down hoax callers, which have already proved successful. A number of people had their phones cut off and one man was prosecuted.

Chief Constable Michael Baxter says:

"Making hoax calls is a waste of important emergency resources and we will do everything we can to ensure that those who waste the time of both the Police and Fire Service are brought to account. They could very easily be putting lives at risk and at the very least divert resources away from other potential emergencies. Out message is clear and simple; do not make hoax calls."

Chief Fire Officer Mick Elliot says:

"I am delighted with the support we have received in the past from our colleagues in the Police in tracking down hoax callers. Hoax calls are without doubt one of the most frustrating things we face as a Fire Service, and of course they waste time, effort and money of a vital emergency service.

During the last eight day strike period we saw the number of hoax calls reducing and that was both because of the awareness raised through the local media and the deterrent caused by the successful prosecution. I hope that those who consider making hoax calls heed this warning and let us get on with the job of keeping the people of this county safe from the affects of fire."
