Work is due to start at one of Barrow's main road junctions next Monday, January 27th, aimed at reducing the number of accidents that have happened there.
Two sets of traffic signals along Abbey Road at its junctions with Ainslie Street and Cheltenham Street/Park Drive are being altered and pedestrian crossing facilities introduced as part of Cumbria County Council's accident investigation and reduction policy. Worn out carriageway between 81 and 163 Abbey Road is also being renewed at the same time to minimise any future inconvenience.
Near the Cheltenham Street/Park Drive Junction from 1996 to 1999 18 people were hurt and at the Ainslie Street junction from 1997 to 2000 13 people were hurt.
Councillor Alan Nicholson, Chairman of Barrow Local Committee, said:
"I realise that this work will cause some inconvenience for road users, especially at peak times, and I apologise for that. I hope that the people of Barrow will be patient as this work is essential and will greatly improve the safety of these two busy junctions. The county council is carrying out the resurfacing work at the same time to avoid inconveniencing local people in the future."
Once the work is complete, the improvements around the Ainslie Street junction will include:
The Cheltenham Street/Park Drive junction improvements include:
The traffic signal work will take about 10 weeks to complete and will involve temporary traffic signals and lane closure on Abbey Road. During the resurfacing work Cheltenham Street and Park Drive will both need to be closed for about a 50-metre stretch near to their junction with Abbey Road for up to one week. Alternative diversion routes will be signed. Access will be maintained at all times.
