This week, Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Allerdale welcomed public participation items from local communities in Keswick and Maryport about the need for traffic calming measures within the area.
The County Council’s Public Participation Scheme has already influenced decisions made by the County Council on various issues. The scheme gives members of the public the opportunity to ask questions, present a petition or lead a deputation at meetings of the Council. Anyone who is a Cumbrian resident or represents a Cumbria-based group, Town or Parish Council can make use of the Scheme.
County Councillor Barbara Cannon, Chair of the Local Committee is keen to encourage the public to attend meetings and speak about issues that they feel strongly about. She says:
“The Local Committee would like to see more people in Allerdale use the public participation scheme so they can put their views first hand to the Councillors who represent them. We would like to give people the opportunity to influence decisions made by our members as part of the decision making process. At this week’s meeting Members have been presented with a petition from Keswick Town Council requesting traffic control on a stretch of Main Street in Keswick. We have also heard from a representative from Home Housing Ewanrigg Netherton Community Trust explaining the need for traffic calming measures on the Ennerdale Road and the Arches in Maryport. Both issues will be assessed under the normal procedures for possible funding in the future along with any other schemes.”
