County Council committed to Shipbuilding Communities Campaign

The County Council’s has reaffirmed its commitment to the national lobby group, the Shipbuilding Community Campaign. The Council’s Cabinet agreed to continue its membership of the group at a meeting held earlier today.

Leader of the County Council, Rex Toft says:

“This is an important campaign. I believe it is important that we retain a strong shipbuilding industry in Britain. The recent impact upon Barrow of the rundown of shipbuilding highlights the importance of maintaining a strong industry. The County Council supports the Shipbuilding Community Campaign and its National lobby with Government and Europe. We must do what we can to ensure that we retain as much work as possible in Barrow for shipbuilding and make sure that our high quality skills base is retained and expanded.

We are helping to develop and implement a new vision for the area through the Urban Regeneration Company, Westlakes Rennaisance, and providing support for this campaign is entirely consistent with that work.”

The cost of membership of the campaign for the current financial year is £5,000 and will be paid from the County Council’s regeneration grants budget.
