Funding boost for community groups in Barrow

Cumbria County Council's Barrow Local Committee approved funding totalling £9,000 for seven community groups in Furness when it met today. 

Councillor Alan Nicholson, Chairman of Barrow Local Committee, said:   

"I am delighted we have been able to fund so many worthwhile community groups in the Furness area today. These groups, between them, provide a vital service to the communities they serve and opportunities to those people who use them. The importance of groups like these to their local communities can never be underestimated." 

Groups to receive the grants were:   

  • Barrow Island Community Centre (£1,000) - the centre provides educational, social, recreational and leisure facilities and activities for improve the life of all local residents. The grant will be used to buy new tables and chairs for the hall. 
  • Barrow Youth Brass Band (£2520) - works in schools and the local community to promote brass banding and encourage young people to take an active part in music. The grant will be used to buy better quality instruments to improve performance at concerts. 
  • Four Grove Tennants and Residents Association (£722) - provides tenants and residents with information on community activities in the area, training opportunities, etc. The funding will be used to buy stationary equipment in order to continue to keep residents informed on activities in the area through newsletters, letters and public meetings 
  • Karelles (£2,000) - a group of local dancers who compete and perform locally and throughout the north west. The group provide an opportunity to participate in a fun, healthy activity that teaches teamwork, sportsmanship and builds confidence. The funding will be used for transport costs and costumes. 
  • Lindal 1st Rainbows and Brownies - this group caters for girls aged between five and 10. New national material is being introduced later this year that will mean that handbooks and badgebooks will be replaced by updated versions (last updated in 1968). The grant will enable the girls who already pay for their uniform and subscriptions to obtain their own copy. 
  • Little Stars Pre-School (£2,000) - a pre-school organisation offering affordable pre school sessions for two to five year olds. It is the only parents and toddler and pre school in Holbeck and Roose. The grant will be used to buy resources. 
  • Musical Fusion Group (£500) - - raises funds and sponsorship to stage folk music and traditional music festivals for the communities of Walney, Barrow, Dalton and surrounding areas. The group want to stage a folk night and traditional night in Dalton each month and need the funding to use a PA system for events and festivals. They currently borrow PA systems.
