New Principal Education Officer for Special Needs for Cumbria

Cumbria County Council’s Local Education Service is delighted to announce the appointment of a new Principal Education Officer for Special Needs.  Ann Graham started her new post this month after moving from Rochdale where she worked as the Pupil Service Manager for Oldham Local Education Authority.

Ann has been responsible for Special Educational Needs Budgets for both mainstream and special schools, Statutory Assessment of Special Educational Needs, School Admissions both mainstream and special and Home to School Transport.   She has also been part of the Access Management Team with responsibility for the Accessibility Strategy for students with physical difficulties.

Ann also brings with her a wide range of teaching experience.  She has been a Primary School Teacher and Deputy Head in 4 Local Education Authorities in the North West of England working in a variety of schools, both mainstream and specialist.  Her specialist areas are within Early Years and Special Education but she also has a strong commitment to Inclusive Education in its widest sense and to the rights and educational entitlement of all children.

Commenting on her new role for Cumbria Local Education Authority Ann says

“I am looking forward to this new challenge.  I hope to impact on the already progressive Inclusive Education in Cumbria and in partnership with schools, other agencies and parents enhance the educational experiences of all children ensuring their access to appropriate provision, which meets their varying needs.  Although I am a workaholic who thrives on challenge I ensure I keep a balance between work and home through my two passions. I am a fanatical Arsenal F.C. supporter and attend as many matches as I can each season. I am also a competitive swimmer and swim on an almost daily basis to be fit enough to compete at Masters level.“

John Nellist, Corporate Director – Education says

"I am delighted to welcome Ann to her new post in Cumbria.  We are very proud of the work our schools do to support children with special educational needs.  It is a very challenging area of work for both schools and my colleagues who work with them.  I am sure that Ann's enthusiasm and experience will enhance what is already a very good team"
