Pomp and Ceremony for Broughton Fair Proclamation

On Friday 1 August at 12 noon, County Councillor Joe Nicholson, Chairman of Cumbria County Council reads the proclamation of the Fair to the assembled villagers in picturesque Broughton. In its capacity as Lord of the Manor, Cumbria County Council sees that the re-enactment of this tradition takes place with all the pomp and ceremony it deserves.

County Councillor Joe Nicholson explains the proceedings. He says,

“I am delighted to be reading the proclamation and signing the Charter on behalf of Cumbria County Council. The official party meets in the lounge of the Old King’s Head at 11.45 a.m. before being led by the Bailiff, Jos Curwen to the obelisk in the village square. County Councillor Oliver Pearson, local councillor for High Furness, introduces proceedings before I read the proclamation. . Chairman of the Parish Council, Lynne Burch repeats the proclamation before new pennies are scattered to the waiting children. Fair cake and ale are then served at the Old King’s Head before I sign the Charter. The Charter contains the signatures of everyone who has read the proclamation since Henry Stanley who was the fourth Earl of Derby. He first proclaimed the Charter in 1593”.

In the time honored tradition of the Annual Proclamation of Broughton Fair, local people, visitors and dignitaries alike will gather together to celebrate the fair and have a thoroughly good time.
