As part of the National Sure Start Month celebrations in Cumbria, Cumbria Early Years Development & Childcare Partnership (CEYDCP) and Carlisle United Football Club will be hosting a Family Fun Day on Sunday 29th June, from 10am until 4pm, at the Study Centre at the Football Club.
Families can take part in many workshops including beauty therapy, rhythm drum & dance, cyber café, games and fitness activity centre, cycle safety adventure courses and designing and producing a magazine for the day. Sponsors of the day include Living Well Health Club, Cumbria Fire Service who will also be carrying out safety displays and Cumbria Police who will be bringing along Police dogs.
CEYDCP teamed up with Carlisle United in March to open the new study centre to raise literacy and numeracy skills of local children up to the age of 16. In April this year the first group of pupils from the 'Playing for Success' project were presented with their certificates of achievement. Up to 20 pupils can use the new centre at a time and football players from the Club mentor and encourage the youngsters throughout their 10 week course and present them with achievement certificates at the end. The latest ICT is available to children using the centre.
County Councillor Joan Stocker, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education says
"This family learning day is a wonderful opportunity for both youngsters and parents to get involved and learn together and have fun at the same time. The Study Centre and the Playing for Success Project has already proved to be a very effective way to encourage children to take up learning opportunities. We found that some children were more enthusiastic to learn if we tuned into their interests, such as football, in an environment other than their local school. The 'Playing for Success' project is entirely consistent with the Council's priority for working in partnership with other interested parties to support projects that aim to raise educational standards for all young people in the area."
Margaret Watson, Study Support Co-ordinator for Cumbria Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership says,
"This Fun Day will give parents and children the chance to spend a great day together as a family. Everyone is welcome to come and try their hand at some of the many activities and workshops on offer whilst having loads of fun at the same time."
