Key Council Stakeholders discuss policy priorities

On Monday 30 June 2003 at Newton Rigg College, Penrith, the Individual Support Consultative Forum meets to discuss Cumbria County Council's Corporate Strategy for 2004/5 in relation to the aims and objectives of the Forum. This involves discussion around the Corporate Strategy theme to `Support Vulnerable People'.  The Forum is the first of the County's four consultative forums to meet and discuss its area of the Strategy and priorities for the future development of services.

This consultation is part of the Corporate planning process, which is the Council's tool kit for agreeing its priorities, what need to be done to deliver them and how those priorities are paid for.  The Forum's views will be considered when the Corporate Strategy is updated for 2004/5.  The Corporate Strategy sets out the Council's priorities for the future, setting specific targets to improve the performance of the Council.  The Strategy has seven key themes and each theme has a top priority action.  The themes and actions are to;

  •         Improve Council services, putting the public first.  The top priority is to explore how public private partnerships can improve the Council's services.

  •         Regenerate and diversify the economy.  The top priority is to work towards regenerating Cumbria's economy after the foot and Mouth Disease crisis in 2001.

  •         Renew our most deprived communities.  The top priority is to achieve the New Vision for Furness and West Cumbria by 2020, regenerating and diversifying the local economy.

  •         Increase educational standards and skills levels.  The top priority is to continue to invest to raise educational standards whilst promoting curriculum breadth and balance.

  •         Support vulnerable people.  The top priority is to put into practice the Commissioning Strategy for Older Adults.

  •         Protect and Sustain the Environment.  The top priority is to develop and put into practice a new strategy for managing waste

  •         Improving the Quality and Safety of Peoples lives.  The top priority is to improve and make safe the journeys and approaches to schools.

The theme relating to the work of the Individual Support Consultative Forum is `Support Vulnerable People' and this will be the area of focus for the meeting.  There are four consultative forums in the Council.  They are Individual Support, Education, Economy and Community.  All of the forums will feed into this process over the coming weeks, discussing the themes relevant to their area of expertise.  The views of the forums will enable the Council's Cabinet and Corporate Directors to receive key stakeholders views.  This will in turn help inform Councillors in setting the themes and key priorities for the coming year.
