Official opening of public access internet kiosk in Alston

On Wednesday 11th June at Alston Town Hall at 11am, County Councillor Joan Stocker, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education will officially open one of the new Cybermoor public access internet kiosks.

The Cybermoor project was set up as a pilot project 12 months ago in areas deemed to be suffering from social deprivation. Over 650 homes in Alston have been provided with a computer and printer and users have been given the opportunity to have internet training to get them started. Over 320 homes now have a superfast broadband internet connection. The Project aims to:

  • Encourage community economic regeneration e.g. develop new skills locally, establish new businesses, expand existing businesses and create new jobs.
  • Test out Government and Local Authority services on line, especially in relation to employment and education e.g. jobs information, housing benefit, lessons on-line
  • Improve access to the Internet and provide assistance to users to overcome any fears they have
  • Encourage learning for people of all ages via on line courses and existing training courses
  • Help people find work
  • Deliver community info and services in new ways
  • Support the work of other Government & European programmes
  • Improve community spirit e.g. allow like minded individuals to come together to take part in activities, help people to find out about what is happening locally
  • Upgrade communications links to Alston to attract new businesses and make existing businesses more competitive.
  • Work with the local schools and e-Learning Foundation

County Councillor Joan Stocker is looking forward to opening the new kiosk. She says

"I am delighted that the Cybermoor project has been so successful. The project is entirely consistent with this Council's priorities to renew our most deprived communities and increase educational standards and skills levels at the same time. We were able to secure around £2m from the DfES to get this project off the ground. It aims to improve the take up of Government services on line and bridge the gap between those people who have access to on-line services, and those who do not. It has already enabled residents to improve their ICT skills, and it is anticipated that it will expand businesses and create jobs locally. Those without a computer will now be able to access the same information from one of these kiosks."
