Funding for more playscheme places in the Barrow area

Young people in the Barrow area are set to benefit from more holiday playscheme places thanks to funding from Barrow Local Committee.

The Committee decided at its meeting yesterday, March 17th, to give a grant of £21,000 to Barrow Community Regeneration Company to part fund holiday playschemes during school holidays this year and next year.

Councillor Alan Nicholson, Chairman of the Local Committee, said:

"This scheme has been running for the past 12 months and was due to finish in May unless alternative funding could be found. I am pleased we have been able to give this substantial grant towards funding these valuable playscheme places in the Barrow area. Evaluation over the past year has shown that children have really benefited from the schemes and parents have been able to go to or look for work, knowing that their children are being cared for in a stimulating environment by qualified staff.

Barrow Community Regeneration Company's project is also supporting other individuals and groups in setting up their own schemes, which will result in more child care jobs in the Barrow area. A number of organisations have been involved in the scheme, which is an excellent example of organisations working together to provide childcare as well as training and jobs for people in the Barrow area."

The grant will part fund a 16 place playscheme for eight to 11 year olds during the summer holiday, October half term and next year's February half term and Easter holidays. It will run from schools and community centres in the Hindpool, Risedale, Old Barrow and Ormsgill areas of the town for one day a week from 8.45am to 5.15pm.
