An appeal for funds by Duddon Inshore Rescue for a new life saving boat was given a boost yesterday when Barrow Local Committee awarded the charity a grant.
Local councillors decided to give the Askham-in-Furness based lifeboat and rescue service £1,418 towards the cost of a new boat and to help fund courses which crew must go on to enable them to carry out their duties.
Councillor Alan Nicholson, Chairman of Barrow Local Committee, said:
"Duddon Inshore Rescue provide a very valuable service in this area. This independent charity receives no funding from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution or HM Coastguard, although they do work with them. They also help out other emergency services.
The current rescue lifeboat cannot be modified to meet new regulations and the organisations needs funding to buy a new boat. They also need funding to send crew on a number of courses, from basic first aid to off shore survival, to help them save lives. I am pleased that the Local Committee has been able to do its bit to help them in their plight. I hope they manage to raise the full amount and wish them luck in their appeal."
