New traffic calming for Bedford Road/Bassenthwaite Street

Work is starting on a new traffic-calming scheme on Bedford Road/Bassenthwaite Street on Monday, March 17th, aimed at improving the environment and quality of life for local people.

Carlisle Local Committee approved funding for the scheme, which involves building four sets of speed cushions, following positive feedback received from public consultation.

Councillor John Collier, Chairman of the Local Committee, said:

"The consultation exercise we carried out with local people and other interested organisations, including the emergency services, encouraged a positive feedback with the vast majority of those who responded in favour of the scheme. Most people were in favour of speed cushions and this is what we will be going ahead with. The scheme will reduce the speed of the vehicles using the road and reduce the risk of accidents between vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, which can only be a good thing."

One set of the cushions will be placed on Bassenthwaite Street and three on Bedford Road. Work is expected to take up to a week and there may need to be temporary traffic lights for a short time.
