Petteril Bank Primary School Ofsted Inspection

Today, the Ofsted Inspection for Petteril Bank Primary School in Carlisle is published. The Inspectors found that pupils make satisfactory progress overall in the core subjects. Pupils' attitudes to school are good. The Acting Headteacher provides the school with a strong sense of direction; she is clear about what needs to be done to improve the quality of education in the school and has the support of the governing body.

The report identifies the following strengths

  • The Acting Headteacher and the Governors of the school have a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the school and are taking good action to address these weaknesses
  • The consistently good teaching that occurs in the Early Years Unit and in the class of Years 1 and 2 pupils is having a positive impact on pupil's achievement
  • There are good systems in place for checking pupils' attendance, behaviour, personal development and their attainment and progress
  • Teaching assistants are used well in all classrooms to support pupils' learning

The report also finds areas that need improvement, these include:

  • Standards in English and Mathematics and provision in information and communication technology
  • Weaknesses in teaching in Years 3 to 6
  • Use of assessment information
  • Pupils attendance

Lucy Vaughan, Acting Headteacher says

"We are pleased that the report recognises our efforts to improve the educational standards within the school since the last inspection. Our intention is to build on these strengths as we seek to improve in Key Stage 2. Teaching staff and the Governing Body have responded positively to the recommendations of the report. An Action Plan will be drawn up and will address all of the recommended areas of improvement. We believe that our children have an entitlement to the best possible teaching and resources, and will work hard to achieve a standard of which staff, pupils and parents can be justly proud."
