Today, Cumbria County Council's South Lakeland Local Committee invested £2000 in training to improve young drivers safety. The courses for young drivers in the Cartmel and Furness areas of South Lakeland aim to reduce the number of tragic accidents on the A590 involving young drivers in the evening.
County Councillor Anne Parker, Chair of South lakes Local Committee says,
"Calls for improvements to the quality of the A590 between the M6 and Barrow have been longstanding. The Local Transport Plan supports lobbying with regional partners for the improvement of the road. The Council has particularly endorsed the view that the High and Low Furness by-pass should be delivered by 2007.
In the meantime I believe it is important within our remit to support services for young people that we do our utmost to make young drivers aware of the dangers posed by the A590. A number of Young Driver Education Programmes (YDEP) will take place aiming to inform, influence and educate a new generation of drivers enabling them to make informed decisions about driving safely. The programmes will teach young drivers how to be more aware and perceptive, reducing the risk of accidents."
