Danger reduction leads to new Eamont Bridge Crossing

At 3.30p.m. on Monday 19 May 2003, County Councillor Gary Strong opens the new zebra crossing on the busy A6 at Eamont Bridge. Local children will help Councillor Strong officially open the crossing.

County Councillor Gary Strong, Vice-Chairman of Eden Local Committee says,

"This crossing has come into being as a result of people power and the commitment of the Council to improve the safety and quality of people's lives. The crossing was funded from Eden Local Committee's `danger reduction Programme' last year after requests from members of the public to provide a safe crossing area in the village. Five people have been injured in accidents at this location, two serious and three slight, over a 5 year period. There was some debate about where the most appropriate place for the crossing would be and after considering the available options, this site was finally agreed as the safest, most suitable place for the crossing. Although not universally the favoured location, I am delighted that I was able to help get this crossing up and running, ensuring that vulnerable users niw have a safe place to cross in the village.

It is a very busy stretch of road and it was difficult for the elderly and children especially, to cross the road safely. This crossing will make a real difference to people's lives."
