Grants for Community Groups in Barrow
Community groups in Barrow have benefited to the tune of £4724 today after Cumbria County Council's Barrow Local Committee approved a series of grants.
Councillor Alan Nicholson, Chairman of the Local Committee, said:
"This Committee is very proud of the help and support it provides to local groups through the neighbourhood development team and are pleased to be helping more groups this month. Our funding enables Barrow people to have access to a wide range of activities and increased opportunities. We fund a wide variety of projects in the Barrow area, all of which provide a valuable service to their local communities, and this month is no exception."
The following groups received grants:
- Barrow Sea Cadets (£1032) - A youth organisation for 12 to 18 year olds providing a range of activities including recognised small boats qualifications, engineering, seamanship and administrative training. The grant will enable the group to buy oars for rowing boats to enable the 40 plus Cadets to take part in rowing activities between May and September.
- Eureka Environmental (£255) - Part of Community Action Furness, this group trains young people in gardening, recreational design and horticultural skills. They are planning to develop waste grounds on Marsh Street into a large scale piece of public mosaic art, working together with local residents and schoolchildren. The grant will be used to buy a cement mixer to use on this and other projects.
- Deposit Guarantee Scheme (£1528) - DIGS helps homeless and potentially homeless people gain access to and keep good quality private rented accommodation in the Barrow area. The organisations underwrites deposits required by private landlords through its bond fund and the grant will be used towards this fund, which is currently fully committed.
- Furness Carers (£1600) - This group offers a support service to those who are looking after a partner, relative or friend who through illness of disability cannot manage at home without help. The grant will go towards the pamper days and individual therapy sessions, which were launched last year.
- The Islanders Dance Troop (£309) - This group, which is now in its sixth year, regularly attends carnivals and competitions across the North West. The group, which has 16 new members, will use the grant to buy new uniforms.
