LOCAL PEOPLE NEEDED TO HELP REDUCE YOUTH OFFENDING

Cumbria Youth Offending Team is looking to recruit local people to work with young people who have committed an offence, helping them to put right the harm done. Volunteers will work alongside restorative justice workers and will oversee work carried out by young people for the victim of their crime or the community. This will include a range of initiatives from befriending to supervising children and young people undertaking reparation work in the community.

The drive for volunteers to work with young people subject to a range of court orders comes after the success of the Youth Offender Panels, established last year. The panels work together with the young offender, their family and wherever possible the victim of the crime, to draw up a contract with the offender. The contract is a programme of agreed activities to put right the harm done to the victim and the wider community and prevent re-offending.

County Councillor John Mallinson, Cabinet spokesman for Care and Social Services says,

“The Youth Offender panels use ground breaking community sentencing, ensuring that the views of the victim are taken into account when looking at forms of reparation. Leading on from the success of that scheme, we are now looking for volunteers to support the work of Cumbria Youth Offending Team by working with young people in the community. The Youth Offending Team is looking to recruit men and women over the age of 18 who have common sense and community spirit. No formal qualifications are needed, as full induction training will be given and continuous developmental opportunities will be available. Volunteers need to accept young people as they are and be able to undertake the work in a non-judgemental way.

Although the posts are unpaid, expenses, including travel and child minding will be paid. Anyone who would like the opportunity to be involved in rewarding and challenging voluntary work which contributes to local community life, should consider applying.”
