New scheme to make life easier for motorists in Carlisle launched

A new scheme to make life easier for motorists looking for car parking spaces in Carlisle city centre is being launched on Friday, May 2nd, at 1pm.

A total of 13 striking variable message signs have been placed at strategic locations across the city centre and Councillor John Collier, Chairman of Carlisle Local Committee, which is responsible for delivering the £250,000 scheme, will be launching the system at one of the signs on Castle Way.

Councillor Collier said:

"I am delighted to be launching this project, which will enable motorists to find a parking space much more quickly and enable them to drive straight to a the nearest car park, knowing that they will find a space. Drivers will no longer need to drive around the city looking for car parks. The new scheme will make visiting Carlisle city centre, whether that be for work, business or pleasure, a much more pleasant experience. I am sure they will of great benefit to local people living in Carlisle and to those visiting the city."

The signs have been installed on all the main approaches into Carlisle and will tell drivers where the nearest car park is and how many available spaces there are in that car park. The signs have been installed for a few weeks and have been widely tested before being switched on this week.

A sensor counts the number of cars entering and leaving the car parks and then automatically sends that information back to a main control system which updates the information on the signs.
