Wyndham School in Egremont Ofsted Inspection

This week, the Ofsted Inspection Report for Wyndham School in Egremont is published. The Inspectors found that pupils achieve well in science in Years 7 to 9, art and design and technology in Years 10 and 11. The new head teacher's leadership is beginning to provide a clear educational direction for the school. Inspectors also found that the school cares for its pupils well and pupils felt safe and valued. The School has effective links with its partner schools, which makes the transfer of pupils to the school a smooth process.

Standards overall we judged to be satisfactory and good in the sixth form. The School has improved consistently over the last 3 years at GCSE level and has received a Department for Education Achievement Award in 2001, 2002 and 2003, however Inspectors still felt that more could be done and higher results could be achieved even though at post 16 Wyndham students came top of the Copeland League Tables.

The Inspectors did, however, find the following weaknesses that need to be improved

  • Achievement, which is unsatisfactory overall in Years 10 and 11 with many pupils not making progress that they should
  • A better match between teaching methods and the learning needs of all pupils, especially in Years 10 and 11
  • The behaviour of a significant minority of pupils, which is holding back improvements in standards
  • Leadership and management, has lacked a rigorous approach to the monitoring and improvement of teaching and learning to develop planning and the use of assessment information to raise standards
  • The Governing Body has been insufficiently involved in shaping the overall direction of the school

Andrew Ward, Headteacher of the School says

"We are obviously pleased that teaching has been rated satisfactory overall but disappointed that the school has been categorised as having weaknesses. It means a great deal of hard work over the coming weeks and months to ensure we put these matters right. I am pleased that the Inspectors have acknowledged how we cater for extra-curricular activities. The provision of competitive sports was one of my priorities when I joined the school in September and I am delighted that this aspect of the school has been singled out for mention in the Report."

Mr O'Neill, Chair of Governors, is confident that the new Headteacher can move the school forward. He says

"I am pleased that Ofsted has recognised the quality of leadership Mr Ward is giving to the school. Wyndham has many strengths and Mr Ward is the right man to build upon them for the continued good of the school."

The Inspectors also found that the parents' views of the school are positive and they feel comfortable in approaching the school with any concerns. The weekly Parents' Bulletin was also praised.
