At 1.30 on Friday 7 November at Chapel Street Infant School County Councillor Bill Smith, on behalf of Cumbria County Council’s Barrow Local Committee launches walk to school week. The walk to school week from 10 to 14 November is one in a long list of projects to promote the Council’s Better Ways to School safety initiative.
`Better Ways to Schools’ is a County Council initiative for all schools, encouraging safer ways to travel to and from school. The children at Chapel Street Infant School took up the challenge of promoting the idea and made a large colourful banner to highlight safety. The art creation is so successful that it has been used as a blue print for banners to be used in schools all over the county. The school also identified the need for young children to be seen on dark winter days. Reflective bibs are the answer and a number of them are to be presented to the school by Councillor Smith on Friday. County Councillor Bill Smith, on behalf of Barrow Local Committee says,
“The children have worked very hard on this project and are looking forward to Friday’s presentation and launch of walk to school week. This is a really fun way of getting the road safety message to young children. They used their own thoughts and ideas about road safety to produce the banner and recommend the reflective bibs.
Cumbria County Council, working in partnership with Capita, is committed to providing a safer environment for children travelling to and from school. The top priority within the Corporate Strategy theme of `Improving the quality and safety of people’s lives’ is to improve and make safe the journeys and approaches to school. I am pleased that the children and staff at Chapel Street Infants have embraced the ideas so effectively and am delighted to have been invited to launch `Walk to School Week’ and formally accept the delivery of children’s reflective bibs.”
