11/11/03 - Extra cash to improve County's quality of life through sustainability

Today, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet awarded nearly £6000 towards 2 Local Agenda 21 fund grant applications.  The Local Agenda 21 fund is used to improve the quality of life for local people by protecting and sustaining the environment.

The 2 grant applications are as follows:

  •       £5k awarded to Cumbria Energy Efficiency Advice Centre to help fund the Solar Initiative for Low Impact Energy (SILIE) project.  The project will enable 20 homes across the County to be installed with solar thermal panels.  Hopefully this will influence other households to take up solar power and help market solar energy in Cumbria.
  •       £750 awarded towards the ‘Green Fund Day’ in Allerdale in March next year.  The event will generate awareness about sustainable development issues and encourage people to adopt more sustainable lifestyles.

County Councillor Lawson Short, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environmental Issues and Protection says

“I am delighted that we continue to support the efforts of Local Agenda 21 projects across the County.  Local Agenda 21 was set up in April 1998 following requests from the Government for local councils to involve residents in local action to protect the environment and therefore preserve and improve the quality of life in their local area. We would like to continue to raise awareness about renewable energy and most importantly the simple, low-cost things people can do to make a difference to the environment.”
