14/11/03 - Cumbria County Council Statement on Ken Young, Interim Corporate Director of Social Services

Today, Rex Toft Leader of Cumbria County Council made the following statement about Ken Young, interim Corporate Director of Social Services.

“The Council is aware that a number of potentially serious allegations have been made concerning the suitability of the appointment of Ken Young as the new interim Corporate Director of Social Services at Cumbria County Council.

Mr Young was highly recommended to the Council by SOLACE (Society of Local Authority Chief Executives) who undertake a quality assurance check on all candidates.

 In light of these allegations Mr Young’s appointment has been delayed while further enquiries are made to establish the facts.  These enquiries are likely to be completed by the middle of next week.  At the moment we are not aware that there is any substance to the allegations.

The Acting Corporate Director of Social Services, Jean Bradshaw, will continue to manage the Department.
