A scheme in Cumbria to recycle used furniture and other household goods for the benefit of people on low incomes is being given a £750 boost by Cumbria County Council. The manager of the Eden Granary Furniture Project, David Morrey, will be presented with a cheque by county council sustainability officer Kathryn Edwards on Monday November 24. The presentation will be at the project’s base at Tudor Warehouse, Brunswick Street, Penrith, at 12.30pm.
Councillor Lawson Short, county council Cabinet member with responsibility for environmental issues, said:
"We hope this grant and the continuing success of the Eden Granary Furniture Project will encourage the setting up of other similar community enterprises in Cumbria.
"The project has a number of aims which the county council fully supports. It saves on landfill space by rescuing furniture which is perfectly serviceable and it helps give those in need a better quality of life. We are delighted to be able to support it further."
The grant was approved earlier this year by the county council’s Cabinet. The money will be used to further publicise the scheme, which is a successful not-for-profit community enterprise started two years ago. The project, which recently moved into new premises at Tudor Warehouse, Brunswick Road, Penrith, has also recently received a grant for £2,500 from the county council’s First Aid Fund towards a new van.
The £750 grant for marketing and publicity material was made from the county council’s Local Agenda 21 fund, which is used to promote sustainable development and support the council’s corporate policy on protecting and sustaining the environment. The council's sustainability team has available funds for Local Agenda 21 projects for the financial year 2003/4. Applications for grant aid are welcomed from community groups and not-for-profit organisations. Bids will be assessed based on specified funding criteria. Groups can find out if their project is eligible for grant aid by contacting the sustainability team on 01228 601057 or visiting the website.
