06/10/03 - Family fun at Kendal Library

On Friday 10thOctober, Cumbria County Council’s Library in Kendal is joining in the National Campaign for Learning and running its annual Family Learning Weekend. The Campaign aims toraise awareness of the importance and scope of family learning as well as strengthening communities and creating more opportunities for the family to learn together.

Families are invited to come along to a free workshop on how to produce a personalised calendar for 2004 using its computers.  They will be able to create unique designs by scanning their own photos or clip art.  No computer experience is necessary as staff will be there to give a helping hand.

County Councillor Tim Heslop, Cabinet Spokesperson with the responsibility for Libraries says

“I am delighted that Cumbria County Council is involved in this Campaign.  Families can teach us the most important things in life. The values, attitudes and culture that we learn from our families can stay with us throughout our lives. We acquire knowledge from school but that knowledge is given a context by the family.

Every child needs family support, without it education can be a struggle. Family learning however can overcome some difficulties associated with a disadvantaged background for both parents and children. Family learning schemes are not only valuable to a child by also to parents, and grandparents, enabling them to return to learning.  I hope people take the opportunity to become involved in the weekend and have a wonderful fun day with all the family.”
