08/10/03 - South Cumbria Network PRU celebrate successful Ofsted inspection

Staff, pupils and parents at the south Cumbria Network Pupil Referral Unit in Barrow are celebrating this week after Ofsted Inspectors praised them for their hard work and achievements.

The Inspectors report said the Centre is a very good, very well led Centre.  The Headteacher, Mrs E Robinson provides a very high quality of leadership and is very well supported by her two deputies together providing a very strong management team.  The quality of teaching is very good with the most significant feature being the understanding from staff about the individual needs of each pupil.  When all these factors, plus the improvements since the last inspection, are taken into account the Unit gives good value for money.

Elise Robinson, Headteacher of the Unit says

“The close relationship we develop with our colleagues in mainstream, the much valued support from parents, our management committee and a committed and dedicated staff team make the Centre the success it is today.  We look forward to further developing opportunities for our pupils to continue to succeed both socially and academically.”

The main findings of the report are:

  • The Headteacher provides very strong leadership and direction for the Unit
  • The overall quality of teaching in the Unit is very good and enables all pupils to make good progress
  • The Unit takes very good care of its pupils and ensures that their welfare is paramount in all its work
  • The Unit has very good links with parents and is in close contact with them at all times in order to celebrate the achievements of the pupils and also address any difficulties that may arise
  • The Unit provides very good careers and vocational education
  • Very effective work is carried out to develop the moral and personal aspects of pupils’ education

The report also finds some areas that could be improved, these are

  • There are areas of the accommodation that have a severely limiting effect upon teaching of information and communication technology, design technology and physical education
  • Formal assessment arrangements are needed so that teachers can make use of the information they gain to set further work to improve achievement
  • The Unit does not provide enough opportunities for extra curricular activities

The Inspectors also found that the parents’ views of the Unit are very positive and they feel they are kept well informed about their children on a day-to-day basis and enjoy a good relationship with the Unit.
