Major roadworks at Maryport are beginning on Monday October 27 on a stretch of the A596 between Mealpot junction and Risehow. The £350,000 Cumbria County Council scheme to replace the road surface, which has become cracked and unsafe, is expected to take eight weeks to complete.
Cumbria County Council member with responsibility for transport, Councillor Kevan Wilkinson, said:
“This investment in the A596 shows the commitment by the county council and the Government to maintain de-trunked roads. It will result in a new, improved and safer surface.
Some delays are inevitable with any road works, but we have planned the scheme to make them as short as possible. We are also co-operating with the utility companies so that there will be no other road works in the vicinity while this scheme is being carried out.”
Junctions between the A596 and side roads are affected by the works. To minimise disruption to local residents, the scheme has been planned so that junctions will be closed for a minimum of time. Each junction will be closed on one day for the old surface to be planed off and closed again on another day for the new surface to be laid. Temporary traffic lights and local diversions will be in operation.
Local residents are being informed of the works.
The works are the first in a series being carried out to repair the A596 between Maryport and Lillyhall in the next three months. Motorists are advised to devise alternative routes or modes of transport where possible to reduce delays to a minimum.
