23/10/03 - Brampton enhancement work starts

The second phase of the Brampton enhancement scheme starts on Monday, October 27. The work will complete the £1/2 million project and most of it should be finished before Christmas.

County Councillor John Collier, chair of Cumbria County Council’s Carlisle Local Committee, said:

“This scheme will to an extent ease the traffic and parking situation in Brampton.

“There will be some disruption, but the improvements, especially the better paving and street lighting, will in the end make it pleasanter and safer for people to visit and shop in the town.”

The work involves:

  • Improving the footways on High Cross Street and Front Street and around Market Place. They will be paved with materials similar to those outside the Spar shop in Market Place.
  • Installing better lighting in the town centre.
  • Creating two one-way streets, one at the rear of Moot Hall and the other on the Front Street access road outside the post office.
  • Improving the car park at Union Lane and creating more on and off-street parking in the town.

Brampton  Parish Council has been fully involved in finalising the details. The work is the second phase of the scheme. Earlier this year puffin crossings were installed on Carlisle Road and Main Street. It is one of the priority transport improvement schemes listed in the Local Transport Plan and was approved by the Carlisle local committee in February.
