31/10/03 - Wishing for a family in National Adoption Week : Cumbria County Council

Monday 3 November sees the start of The British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) National Adoption Week. This year’s theme is “Wishing for a Family” and here in Cumbria, we have asked some of our children who are waiting for adoptive families to tell us their wishes as we look to recruit adopters in the South of the county.

Emma’s Wish “ I wish my Mummy and Daddy’s House to be pink. I want them to have two cats and two dogs. I wish my new Mummy and Daddy will buy me sweeties. I want them to have big smiley faces “ Emma is 5 years old.

Emma’s sister, Sarah who is 4 years old wishes “ I wish my Mummy and Daddy to have a cat I can stroke and a dog to pat. I want them to have happy faces. I want them to play with my toys with me and say, “Sarah’s a cutie”.

County Councillor John Mallinson, Cabinet spokesman for Care and Social Services says,

“These are two sisters who are waiting for a family. Although their names have been changed, their wishes are genuine. We have 49 children who are “wishing for a family”. These children are aged between 0 and 12, but the majority of them are aged between 2 and 5. Amongst those waiting are 10 brothers and sisters and 2 groups of 3 who need to stay together.

We will be having a display stand in The Westmorland Shopping Centre, Kendal from 3rd to 7thNovember and another the Market Hall, Barrow-in-Furness on 3rd, 5th, and 7thNovember. There are two Information Evenings scheduled for Monday 10thNovember at The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal from 7.30 to 8.30. and Thursday 13thNovember at The Custom House in Barrow from 7.00 to 8.00. These events are an informal opportunity to meet adopters and members of Social Services Family Placement Teams to get more information about adoption.

We are looking for adopters who can make wishes come true for children awaiting adoption in Cumbria.”
