Cumbria County Council's Eden Local Committee today agreed to make Penrith's Castle Drive one-way traffic order permanent in response to local wishes. The Committee agreed to fund the scheme, which makes the temporary traffic order implemented in November 2002, permanent, with a grant of £2,500.
County Councillor Mary Warburton, Chair of Eden Local Committee says,
"The experimental order to make Castle Drive in Penrith one-way has been very successful and very popular. As well as becoming one-way, the scheme enabled the creation of extra residents only parking bays. The consultation period allows six months for statutory objections to the scheme but none was received. Consultation with public transport operators has also been positive and I am delighted that we have confirmed today that this scheme becomes permanent and that we are improving the safety and quality of people's lives."
The Castle Drive Scheme meets objectives within the local transport plan to reduce community severance and reduce road traffic casualties and danger.
