03/09/03 - Eden Local Committee 'on the ball' with community grants

Today, Cumbria County Council's Eden Local Committee ratified almost £2,500 for community groups in Eden. The grants, given by Neighbourhood Forums across Eden, are to support local community activities and projects and include awards across Eden for the Penrith Sapphires Ladies Football Club and the 'Youth in the Barn' Christian youth project. County Councillor Mary Warburton, Chair of Eden Local Committee, says,

"I am pleased to support community groups and projects in Eden. The grants provided by Neighbourhood Forums give people the chance to participate in community activities of all kinds. This promotes rural life and social inclusion for people in rural communities. Today's funding includes a grant of £200 for a Christian youth project called `Youth in the Barn'. This youth group provides a meeting place for young people aged 11 to 18 from Penrith and District. Around 30 young people meet weekly and the forum's grant will help towards the purchase of new equipment for the group. Another exciting project to receive funding is the Penrith Sapphires Ladies Football Club.

Other types of projects funded by the community grants programme include social care projects, purchase of equipment, educational events and visits, and arts initiatives. Community projects enable people to get together, avoiding the isolation that can result from living in a rural area like Eden."

Kath Savage, Chair of the Penrith Sapphires Ladies Football Club says,

"I am delighted that neighbourhood forums around Eden have chosen to support the team with grants totalling £500. The Sapphires was set up three years ago to meet the needs of woman and girls in Eden interested in playing football. The club has gone from strength to strength with promotion to North West division 2, and cup final appearances in the last two seasons. Club development has included a new under 12 team, shortly to be followed by an under 14's. The club has a reputation for developing young talent and a number of young women have attended trials or been signed by top national clubs including Manchester United. The club is successful, well regarded and a credit to the whole of Eden. I'm pleased that Eden Local Committee and its Neighbourhood Forums have acknowledged our commitment with this financial support."
